The definition of “grind” is: to reduce something to small particles by crushing it hard, dull work.

On a panel last week, I was asked to talk about “grind culture.” We are a human race desperately in need of stay-puts: Presence. We are a capitalistic society focused on outputs: Hustle. We are a culture obsessed with inputs: Research. And we've decided that our lives are worth living. Because so many of us have realized that time is not guaranteed. I want to know that we will not have to become martyrs for a system that never intended to protect us.īonus: before you ask why I have censored the name, it is so I don't violate ToS. I don't want press conferences, I want reform. I don't want arrests, I want convictions. I am tired of seeing women who look like me become hashtags for country who uses our pain for PR. I will not stop speaking out about being a Black woman until our lives are valued, trusted and protected. I will never be satisfied until we all feel safe in our own homes. I will never be satisfied until I feel safe in my own home. No matter how many support us, it only takes one to kill us. People would rather murder us than listen to us.Īs Black women, we deal with one hard truth. Our lives are at risk simply for demanding better. It's no secret that Black women who are loud about anti- racism are not safe. The police told me to stop talking about race online. They are frequently sent to my inbox through anonymous sources. Society continues to condition us to believe that there is a "right way" to be Black, and being wrong is why we lose our lives.

We have been told how to fight, how to talk, how to exist.Īnything else is a direct threat to our lives. I refuse to "agree to disagree" on the value of our lives.

How can we ever be unarmed if our skin is considered the weapon? I post the messages I get because I am not alone in receiving them.Īs long as being a Black woman in America is not safe, i will continue to scream about our experiences, and not just the ones that make you comfortable.Īs long as my body, my skin, my life is weaponized, I will not stop. People always ask when I'll stop talking about Blackness. People always ask why I can't write "happier" content. People always ask why I talk about oppression.
